SAN DIEGO:

THE LAMPLIGHTER (San Diego/Mission Hills CA) Best venue in San Diego, bar none. Seven nights a week. 30,000 songlist.   Great song list  and good sound system.  Club mics are a little on the inferior side to to singer abuse. Not a lot of seating area.  Has pool tables (which can be a pain when a lot of people are there---but sometimes one is moved out of the way). Great staff and good KJs.  This is Moondoggie's home venue.

ROSARITO BEACH HOTEL (Rosarito Bch Baja Norte Mexico). Large karaoke club 3-4 nights a week (weekends).  Great-courteous KJ.  Not real extensive songlist, but nice stage and club mics are respectable. If you are good, you might sing 5+ songs per night.

CAT'S MEOW (New Orleans: Bourbon Street)

This joint is a hoot if you're a tourist or karaoke voyeur. Its a joke if you are a karaoke enthusiast.  The songlist is very short-pathetic for a fulltime karaoke club.  The songs are probably the worst quality of karaoke ever produced.  To make matters worse, (if thats possible) the host of the Meow show will sing every THIRD SONG! (and sometimes more)! I've visited this venue a half dozen times in the last couple years and the KJ-singers are usually above average but would never win a contest in their own club!

 Don't even dream of doing more than one song, unless you want to wait 4 hours!  The sound system is mediocre and the "guest mics" are corded dollar store junk!  The drinks are outrageously priced.  The only possible redeeming value is the crowd...its usually large.

SAN FRANCISCO

THE MINT: Great K-Club on Market. Voted Best Karaoke Joint on the Bay 2005! Full-time karaoke venue. Traditionally set next to a sushi bar (with so-so sushi).  Mixed straight/gay with a  higher mix of the latter than former: Its SF. Great song list and many quality club singers.  "Frank" the KJ is  a true PRO!!!--- but of course can be cranky...if YOU ARE A WHINER!!. Latest  Moondoggie visit: 9/21/05.  The place is a "shotgun" style venue, and you will love the crowd.  If you are a Karaoke enthusiast...GO TO THIS JOINT!!!

DIMPLES (Burbank):  Founded by Bing Crosby, it is reputed to be the first Karaoke bar in USA. I've sang there 4 times, and each time is a little more disappointing than before.  Song list is so-so. KJ/hosts sing quite a bit.  Sound system is extremely poor for a fulltime K-joint. Club mics are dollar store junk-do not resonate and if you are a strong singer the signal will brake.  Cordless had no more than 10 feet of reception. Drinks are expensive and the food is so-so.  The decor is pretty cool and joint has a lot of cozy-dive-karaoke feel.  Its a good place to go to say "I've been there" but not a longterm place to sing because the sytem is weak.  Staff was all nice and considerate.
